Draft Positions

As a result of our debate, panel discussion, break-out sessions, and plenary group, the following statements were drafted as consensus.  Obviously, much of the details of the debate are absent; consensus means exactly that:  all of the attendees agreed to the following statements and position statements.  We encourage you to adopt and quote these as you wish, especially in writing to our congress.

Consensus Position Statements (from the afternoon sessions)

bulletThe U.S. should continue to consistently support democratic principles at home and abroad and lead by example.
bulletEducation of the American people should embrace a global perspective to promote national security.
bulletINS reform and adequate funding can ensure proper enforcement and protect the rights of immigrants. [some contention noted]

Belief Statements (from the morning break-out sessions)

Arbitrary profiling compromises equality.

bullet

US citizens and legal immigrants should be granted the full protections of US law.

bullet

The US should lead by example, consistently abiding by the Rule of Law at home and abroad.

bullet

INS reform and consistent support/enforcement helps protect the rights of citizens.

bullet

The US should adopt a global perspective to national security.

bullet

Education must reduce fear.

bullet

A re-evaluation of US Middle Eastern policy (or foreign policy in general) is recommended.
